A Story of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor
During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to arrange a place to stay after getting there, but once I got there, a big convention was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but soon learned the local airport, not like the one back home, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of what my next move should be and growing worried, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking near the casino, thinking it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that was open all night. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing the admissions interview the next morning, but as a broke student, I couldn’t afford.
We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared lost as a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired whether I needed help. I explained my situation and right away she said I was welcome to sleep on the ground of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered some food: one sandwiches she had from her evening job. This gave me the bathroom and a protected spot to rest to sleep.
Looking back, I can appreciate the significant risk she undertook as a woman allowing a guy she’d just met crash at her place. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she offered that help – but still incredibly thankful.
Ultimately, I did not go to that university, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish life has repaid her good deed tenfold. Our society requires more people who show such kindness.
