Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off after a topsy-turvy final round of play.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the win, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai started the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.
Play-Off Climax
This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
