Anthony Barry Shares His Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
In the past, Anthony Barry competed at a lower division club. Today, he's dedicated to assist Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory next summer. His journey from player to coach commenced as an unpaid coach with the youth team. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He realized his calling.
Rapid Rise
The coach's journey stands out. Commencing with his first major job, he established a standing through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs included elite sides, and he held roles with national teams across multiple countries. He's coached stars like top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.
“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a methodical process enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Obsession, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock day and night, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and dislikes phrases including "pause".
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Driven Leaders
He characterizes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. We must not only to stay ahead with developments and to lead and innovate. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“There are 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We must implement a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from concept to details to know-how to performance.
“To develop a process for effective use during the limited time, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections among them. We have to spend time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.”
World Cup Qualifiers
He is getting ready for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy ought to embody all the positives from the top division,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the robustness, the integrity. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.
“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.
“There are morale boosts for managers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to speed up play through midfield.”
Thirst for Improvement
His desire for improvement is all-consuming. While training for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious regarding the final talk, as his cohort included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out difficult settings available to him to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail locally, where he also took inmates for a training session.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard included impressed and he brought Barry to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff except Barry.
The next manager at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he brought Barry over of Chelsea to work together again. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
