An iconic resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
