Long-Forgotten Bach Compositions Performed for First-Ever Performance in Three Centuries

The composer is considered to have written the pair of organ works during his early years

Previously unknown organ compositions by the musical genius Bach have been revealed and performed in the central European country for the premiere performance in 320 years.

The nation's Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer labeled the finding of the two compositions a "significant occasion for the global music scene".

They initially attracted notice of a musical scholar in the early nineties when he was documenting the composer's papers at the Belgian royal collection.

The organ works - the Chaconne in D minor and Chaconne in G minor - were without dates and anonymous. The researcher spent the next 30 years working to authenticate the authorship of the pieces.

Memorable Concert

They were presented at the historic Leipzig church in Leipzig, where the composer is buried and where he served as a music director for over two decades.

The two pieces were performed by Dutch organist the renowned organist, who said he was privileged to be able to play them for the first time in 320 years.

He said the compositions were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "a valuable resource for contemporary organ players, as they are also suitable for reduced-scale organs".

Cultural Relevance

They are thought to have been written at the beginning of Bach's professional life, when he was serving as an music instructor in the municipality of the German town in the German region.

Mr Wollny, who is now the leader of the musical archive in Leipzig, said they demonstrated several characteristics particular to the artist.

"Stylistically, the pieces also contain elements that can be observed in Bach's compositions from that time, but not in those of different artists," he said.

They are believed to have been transcribed in 1705 by one of Bach's pupils, Salomon Günther John.

At a revealing of the pieces, the expert said he was "virtually certain that Bach had composed the pair of works" and they have now been incorporated into the official catalogue of his works.
