Miami Heat and Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Recent Arrests
The Miami Heat put up eighty-six opening half scores versus the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat earned a crushing 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since guard Terry Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was additionally detained in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into illegal gambling. Both men deny the claims.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they scored eighty-six first-half scores to lead Memphis by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.
Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four points and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he goes through this."
Portland also secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the team to a decisive 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events
Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the fairness of the game," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA is unable to.
"So, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they announced recently was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
