A comprehensive search and recovery mission is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated boats carrying aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Cuba.

Military Search Missions Deployed

The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to find the missing boats, which were carrying at least nine personnel, according to a navy statement.

The ships had been scheduled to reach Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Relief to the Nation

Cuba has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are equipped with proper safety equipment and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort said.

The nine-person crew are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is working closely with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Recent Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had transported 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.

That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and food.

Broader Political Context

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the island nation began.

The United Nations have since highlighted "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgeries called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy tensions have increased over the past months, with comments from several leaders highlighting the complicated situation regarding relations.

Reacting to certain comments, a senior Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to find the boats and secure the safety of the crews.

As of now, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
