Unbowed Celtic's manager does not fear dismissal however the Parkhead faithful show fury after loss.
Wilfried Nancy insisted he had no concerns about dismissal, asserting, “The team is really close to a turnaround,” even after sliding worryingly close to the chopping block with a heavy setback against their arch-rivals.
Another Collapse Results in Old Firm Disaster
Celtic were in front Rangers at the interval but a disastrous second period enabled Rangers to draw level on points with the defending league title holders. The former MLS manager, who was hired from the MLS, has now been in charge for six losses in eight games.
“We are together at the club,” said the manager.
Questioned about whether he was concerned, he said: “That’s not my focus. My focus is on finding ways to aid my players to be good on details.
Supporters' Anger Erupts
Celtic’s support made their feelings clear – towards the hierarchy – in their hundreds at Parkhead. Club directors are reportedly likely to re-appoint the former boss, who had a fruitful interim spell last year, if the Frenchman were sacked.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. So this is the reality for the moment. Yet by saying that’s how it is, that is not a sign that I am giving up. No. My point is we are really close, imminently close to turn things around.”
“Really, Really Close”
The coach remains focused on the fact his team can perform strongly for a half at a time. In fact, if not for wastefulness in front of goal they would have been more than 1-0 up. “The performance had merit aside from the fact that we didn't take more goals,” he said. “I acknowledge that we lost, but I must remain objective.
“The performance we had at certain moments was really, really, really high. That happened. And I would not talk like that if it was untrue. But that’s why, in terms of results, I noted this is the same story. That’s why I believe a change is coming to things turning around. But for the moment: small things.”
“There were many, many good things that we did, like today again. The issue now it’s about consistency. My outlook would be different the same. This is why I firmly believe we’re going to be able to fix this.”
Opposition Reaction Response
The victorious boss played down talk of a serious challenge despite what felt like a landmark win. “We take it game by game, and we can gradually build momentum,” he said. “The faith in the group is outstanding.”
