What hell is the world of governance. Look around that cabinet table: all members is grappling with near impossible portfolios without the means to do what they know is needed.

An ill-advised leadership contest at this moment was bound to give the Labour leader a setback. The eleven percent support at the Caerphilly Senedd special election might not even be their nadir.

They prepare for criticism, but they're only human. Frequently, the Labour MP boldly states what all can see: that there is "deep disillusionment in this country at the moment" and "a growing sense of despair about whether anyone is capable of turning this country round".

The government's responsibility is to do whatever it takes to block this outcome. Plan for partnerships, stay suitable for like-minded parties when party affiliations matters less than the essential limit against a political danger unseen in contemporary politics.

This represents a mission to defeat discouragement.
